Disciplinary Process

The disciplinary process refers to the portion of the judicial system designed to handle allegations that a student violated regulations governing student conduct.

Who can file a complaint?
Only the faculty, staff and students of Michigan State University can file a formal complaint.

What is done with complaints?
Students alleged to have violated university regulations will have an informal meeting with a staff member to review the allegations, and clarify their rights and responsibilities in the judicial process.  At these meetings, students will also be asked to either admit or deny the allegations, and request that either a staff member or judiciary take appropriate action. Students who deny the allegations will be provided with a formal hearing and the opportunity to call witnesses, etc.

What happens if the student is found responsible?
Sanctions range from a formal warning to suspension from Michigan State University .  All sanctions are intended for guidance and correction of behavior only, and are considered part of the educational mission of the University.  More specific sanction information can be found in Article 4 of the Academic Freedom Report (the "AFR") in Spartan Life.
