Appropriate Use of Computers

"The privilege of use of computing systems and software, as well as internal and external data networks, is important to all members of the University community. The preservation of that privilege for the full community requires that each individual faculty member, staff member, and student comply with institutional and external standards for appropriate use." [ Michigan State University Acceptable Use of Computing Systems, Software, and the University Digital Network (Administrative Ruling)]

As a general rule, good common sense should dictate the appropriate use of computing technology.  In general, faculty, staff and students must not;

  • violate federal, state or local laws.
  • violate the privacy and usage privileges of others.
  • intentionally seek information on, obtain copies of, or modify files, other data, or passwords belonging to other Users.
  • represent themselves electronically as others.
  • utilize computing services to harass, abuse or otherwise violate the rights of other Users.

For a more comprehensive review of University expectations surrounding the acceptable use of computing services and the university's digital network, please refer to the Administrative Ruling entitled University Acceptable Use of Computing Systems, Software, and the University Digital Network.
